Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing is a technique in which you become a helper in the change process and express acceptance of your client. Motivational interviewing relies on people's capabilities for exercising free choice and changing through a process of self-actualization. The therapist who utilizes motivational interviewing is directive, with a goal of eliciting self-motivational statements and behavioral change from the client in addition to creating client discrepancy to enhance motivation for positive change. Motivation is essential for progression in addiction treatment, while lack of motivation can serve as major hurdle.

 

The therapist may use techniques that involve:

  • Reflective listening

  • Open-ended Questioning

  • Affirmations

 

Motivational Interviewing may be helpful in a variety of circumstances, such as:

  • Anxiety

  • Gambling problems

  • Prescription drug abuse

  • Illicit drug abuse

  • Pornography or sexual addictions
